Press Launch @ BME

Light! Camera! Action! at the British Music Experience for a wonderful launch of a pioneering project...and yes we mean SoundStage. Lots of music, cameras and just as much fun to set the momentum for youth in Greenwich. Working alongside, Youth Music, Greenwich Music Services and the Greenwich Theatre, as well as other reputable agencies in the Greenwich Borough to engage the young minds in and about Greenwich to put together a mind-blowing event in July.

The stage was rocked with a rich energetic performance from Hip Hop Indie Band "The Stow", as well as other youth who spontaneously jumped up on the stage with their best of music skills - everyone interested got to have a jam on the Mic and instruments. We then revived our energy sources with Pizza, BBQ wings and soft drinks - everything necessary to make a fantastic event buzzing.

Chillin' With The Stars: Teena Marie

At first it was just a hint of excitement...

I wasn’t sure what to expect or what it was going to be like. But all that gradually faded as we neared the Indigo2 room and the lush sounds of the Teena Marie sound check was within earshot.

As soon as we were inside, everything made sense. The band was playing and fine-tuning their sounds, the lights were dancing around every corner of the room and the wonderful voices of her back-up singers caressed the walls. Teena herself was offstage controlling the balance of sounds and literally barking orders to the sound techs to take things up or down. The rest of the sound check was nothing short of a musical “fix” for a musician. As if that wasn’t good enough, after we were already heavily dosed-up on her musical genius, we got a chance to go backstage to the “star” room.

We hung out with her crew and her band; listened to the manager (a wonderful hostess and master events manager for the indigo2) since she was gracious enough to share some tips about organising events with us. Teena herself wasn’t too far off this mark either; she opened up to us, while trying to get through her dinner (which we got to try). She made it look so easy and spoke about it even easier.

It didn’t take a lot to see through all the niceness and see the hard work over the years that had shaped her into who was now sitting before us in heeled boots, jeans, a cashmere sweater and her glasses; but listening to her talk about the ins & outs, dos & don’ts and the general make-up of a successful career was remarkable. After enjoying such star-treatment and rubbing shoulders with her band members and family, we got to show them around the O2, and the Michael Jackson Exhibition (Now @ the O2).

With all the work they had evidently put into the show that was to take off later, they were surprisingly relaxed and far from anxious. A calm and almost carefree Teena together with her daughters and nephew strolled with us and talked about something and nothing until we finally hand-delivered them back to their dressing rooms to take on the night with her Motown-meet-funk-meet-soul-meet-R&B. Go Teena. Best night with the BME so far.
